First Freeze is a composition I wrote that is inspired by another cold winter day here in Cincinnati. I spent a little time outdoors checking out the interesting rain and ice that formed on the trees and shrubs after a day of snow and sleet. The cold was bitter but unlike me, the grass, trees and bushes seemed unfazed. The weight of the ice bent the trees, but that just allowed them to show off their flexibility. The trees, plants and grasses that were thriving, were doing so because of the depth and health of their root systems. It was a reminder to me to: a) stay flexible even when life get's cold and gray, and b) remember that the good things that we see on the surface are often times the results healthy roots. One of my favorite quotes is: “A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees.”
